CD Review - ‘Espers 2′ by Espers
This is my Rough Trade find of the summer. It is a CD of psychadelic-folk music performed by America’s Espers. The songs have the hypnotic, brooding atmosphere of a soundtrack from a film about sad ghosts. They use all manner of rock, folk and classical instrumentation to build a layer of sound that reminds me of the slower, tender moments of Cold Fairyland, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson and Sigur Ros. Espers could be a hippy version of Low, but Meg Baird’s beuatiful, ethereal voice has a more central role making them much lusher and more colourful than their Duluth counterparts.
