Battlestar Moodle-ica
I’m mixing my metaphors today, having spent much of today and yesterday upgrading to Moodle 1.7 and watching the first few episodes of Battlestar Galactica.
Moodle 1.7 is quite different from 1.6 from an admin point of view. There is much more control of permissions and roles for different types of users. For example, users can be given more or fewer permissions to delete forum posts or even to grade each other’s assignments. There is also some AJAX support, more testing capability and control for enrolments and submitting assignments. Modules are now being supported by Google, OU and even Microsoft which shows that Moodle is really starting to mature.
I have had some trouble uploading the new files onto my webhosting space because I can not ftp more than 7 megabytes in a single upload. This meant I had to break it down into smaller sections and use the webftp tool included in Dreamhost. The Marking block has a bug in it but so far the attendance block seems to work. This took much longer than expected.
The school VPN tunnel is also working, which means it is only a matter of time before we can put the school’s web server onto the Internet for student access rather than park it on my webhost space.
Give me more Cylons to strike down!
