International Day 2006
One of the best things about working in an international school is being able to learn about the different cultures that are part of our community.
Today we celebrated International Day, which is an annual event where we all get a chance to dress up in our national costumes, sample each other’s food, listen to each other’s music and even participate in games and sports from around the world. For me, the food is always the highlight. Somebody ought to setup an international food court in Shanghai prepared by the families of my students. It would do really well, especially if they served the Belgian waffles, South African cakes and samosas.
I’m really lucky to teach such open minded and responsive young people. They all got into the events of Korean see-saw, hop skotch, mah jong and Aussie rules football. The weather held out to be mild and clear. All these activities culminated in a finale to release hundreds of tagged balloons into the blue autumn sky. I am sure all the locals of this Shanghai suburb would be puzzled, yet marvel at such a spectacle.
The staff meeting was even truncated afterwards. What a perfect day!
