Cleaning Your Computer Keyboard

This is not something I have ever given much thought to beyond wiping off the dust every now and then, but our school nurse raised it as a possible cause of sickness. Our IT guru replied by giving this very useful advice:

Keyboards are pretty disgusting, bits of skin (and hair), food, spilt sugary drinks, etc, etc … (there was one company that I worked for where we found a colony of beasts living in a keyboard, gross)

Well there are two ways to do this, the complicated, (and through) way or the easy quick clean.

The first way is too firstly turn every thing off, unplug the keyboard, remove all the keys, vacuum out the detritus, clean the keys with a degreaser wipe the membrane over with alcohol and re-assemble. The second method is to turn everything off, turn the keyboard up side down, give it a good shake, (a small paint brush can be useful for getting too the hard to move bits of rubbish), and then when most of the chunky bits have been dislodged put it back on the desk and either clean with alcohol and a lint free cloth, or with a slightly damp cloth that has been dipped into a solution of mild detergent. Mice can be cleaned in a similar way.

Increasing corporate`s junk their computers after three years, so on the whole the keyboards get binned before they become too nasty.
