Emil de Waal Will Play Danish Nu Jazz in Shanghai
I know nothing about this music except what I have read on local websites. This is what SmartShanghai says about him:
4Live presents the drummer Emil de Waal who is one of Denmark’s top musicians, having appeared on more than 150 albums. He also holds the Danish Jazz Grammy nomination. His latest project is described as “a colourful parade of styles and sounds…It’s unclassifiable but no less fun for that.”. Together with his band, they have attracted the attention of the media and audiences with their scenic, dusty and dreamy ambient music, influenced in equal parts by jazz, rock and classical music. “Their sound combines both the legacy of jazz legend Duke Ellington and the experimental noise-rock of Sonic Youth”. Tickets 100rmb at the door. Starts 9pm. http://www.myspace.com/emildewaal
I just heard a song and it reminds me of Henry Cow, which is a mashup of strange jazz and progressive rock. I like strange fusion music a lot, so I hope to go to the show at 4Live tonight (March 3rd). He is also playing JZ tomorrow.
