Oh No! The Subs are playing in Shanghai while I am attending a conference in Singapore. If you haven’t heard them, The Subs are China’s MC5. They even have bad clothes and massive Afros. Their post punk has lots of fun,sweat and vigour. Last spring, they played a show at Harley’s Bar last full of cheek to jowl with a heeving mosh pit. I love them. They sound like they invented rock and roll in the middle of a supernova. The Subs are a testament to the unintended benefits of the grey/black market. A few years ago, they started finding cast off CDs around Beijing from the likes of Fugazi and Nirvana and this made them want to start their own band.
