Animal Cruelty in Shanghai and China

One thing I really dislike about China is the level of animal cruelty that is practiced, tolerated and accepted. I know China is a developing country and that animal welfare tends is a low priority while there is still a lot of poverty. There is no excuse for cruelty to animals however poor or fed up you may be. Today, I saw a woman pickup a young stray kitten and throw it face down onto the road as hard as she could with the intention to hurt or even kill the poor creature. I have never seen such a display of cruelty and it made me feel sick to the core. She may believe that the animal is vermin that should be wiped off the face of the planet, but it was just a kitten. Fortunately, the cat was just shaken up and went to hide under a car. Sadly, animal cruelty is very common in China as you can see from this post in yesterday’s Shanghaiist reporting a nasty situation where people pay to watch crocodiles eat live ducks.
