See the Great ‘Paul’ of China on TV
Comic Paul Merton has recently been touring China, making a light hearted documentary that is currently being aired on Channel Five in the UK. If the few clips we have seen are anything to go by, then this follows the best tradition of whimsical British travelogues such as Louis Theroux’s Wild Weekend.
Highlights include a visit to Mr Woo who makes amazing robots out of rubbish, much to the frustration of his long suffering wife. There is also a meal at a restaurant serving donkey’s penises and a trip to an expensive poodle parlour specialising in multi-coloured mohicans.
British humour likes to poke fun at other people’s expense and Merton is no stranger to snidey comedy himself. He was a long term co-host on the satirical news panel show, “Have I Got News For You?” Paul Merton in China seems to be a different animal entirely. His dry commentary may tease the locals, but there is a warmth and enthusiasm that makes the show something we are dying to see.
