Losing Your Bank Card

I did this once in December 2004, and I thought I had trained myself never to walk away without my card. Last night everything went wrong. I realised my card was missing when I tried to pay for a new camera earlier today.

How do I dig myself out of this mess?

  1. Get my passport and red bank book as ID
  2. Jenny calls 114 to get the nubmer of my bank and calls them to check that no one withdrew money from my account after I walked away. No one took out any money so the machine must have swallowed the card.
  3. Jenny calls China Merchant Bank who tell us that there is nothing they can do to help us until Monday after Tomb Sweeping Day.
  4. I take my passport and red bank book to ICBC to replace my card. They tell me I have to wait one week for a new card.
  5. Our work around is to transfer my ICBC funds to a new account, which I setup on that day. I walk out with a pristine ICBC card for my new account. This process takes 15 minutes and costs me 15 RMB.
  6. The next step is to tell ANZ to change my standing order so they send funds to my new account.
