This is an experiment to get into podcasting again by recording simple, short and unedited conversations with Clyde and Rowena who have been living and working in Shanghai for the last few years. In addition to teaching English, they have become what Malcolm Gladwell would call connectors getting to know all sorts of people from many different friendship groups and backgrounds. They have some great stories, observations and anecdotes about their travels in Shanghai and China.

This chat was recorded in a taxi using a mobile phone and it may some future tweaking to get the sound levels right.

Podcasts or netcasts are wonderful and are totally free. If you download enough of them, it becomes like having your own personal talk radio station. I subscribe to a whole slew of RSS feeds pushing audio and video downloads into my computer that keep me informed about the world of technology and the world in general. I have never been so well informed and I listen to them in the bathroom when I get up, in the evening when I walk home and at night when I’m getting ready to go to bed. I also play them from time to time during my lessons as a learning resource.

You need to be a little nerdy to get netcasts on to your MP3 player, although Itunes users can easily find netcasts on the Itunes store and sync them onto their Ipods. Otherwise, you need to find the RSS feed, which is an XML file containing details about all the files that need to be downloaded. Then you need to copy the downloaded file onto your portable media player. I have been happily using Ipodder on my Ubuntu computer to do this, but it is not quite as user friendly as Itunes.

Here are some of my favourite netcasts. The http addresses are the RSS feeds you need to subscribe to each netcast. Please note the technology bias and all the video files are in the mp4 format for Ipods. You will also need a media player or computer that can display this type of video file.

I looked at this site after seeing a debate on the BBC Newsnight video netcast. The debate was between Professor Andy McIntosh of Truth in Science and Professor Lewis Wolpert of the British Humanist Association. Truth in Science want to present intelligent design as a theory to be discussed alongside evolution. They have produced a teaching pack for schools, which promotes this agenda. 59 schools have bought this pack in the UK.

The British Humanist Association is horrified about this teaching pack, because they see it is overlooking an evidence based approach in favour of promoting religion in science education. Jeremy Paxman oversaw this debate. You can download it this week using Itunes or another netcast subscription program. Search for Newsnight.
